Update: Meeting at 5 p.m. in Bayport to discuss $30M bond

Update: The Baypor-Blue Point school board is holding a 5 p.m. meeting Tuesday, July 21, for the sole purpose of discussing a possible upcoming bond referendum. Officials say no resolutions will be voted on.

The meeting will be in the high school, room 220.

Original Story: An unsafe roof. Cramped libraries. Outdated science rooms.

A committee assembled by the Bayport-Blue Point School District found it will take about $30 million to address those concerns and more within the district. The facilities review committee, after two years of examining district needs, presented its recommendations to the Bayport-Blue Point school board last month.

The district is now considering putting a bond up to voters through a district-wide referendum.

A Monday announcement indicated the school board “is exploring the feasibility of moving forward with a building renovation project that would provide critical infrastructural, programmatic and facility updates at the district’s five schools.”

The $30 million plan includes updates to athletic fields, new libraries district-wide, the replacement of the slate roof at Blue Point Elementary, which the committee found is beginning to detach, new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) labs in the the middle and high schools and more.

District residents can learn more by clicking here.

There’s also an online survey on the district’s website through which residents can give their input.

Responses will accepted until Monday, Aug. 3, officials said. Those without computer access can pick up a paper survey at the district’s administrative center at 189 Academy Street in Bayport.

Correction: Due to a typographical error, an earlier of this version incorrectly indicated the district would not be considering putting the bond up to voters through a district-wide referendum.

That was changed to now considering.
